Obtaining Financial Support

Marine spatial planning (MSP) is not possible without adequate financial resources. Although MSP is inherently a governmental responsibility, a common problem occurs when funding, which is often available for research, is not available for other MSP activities, such as plan preparation, implementation, and the monitoring and evaluation of MSP performance.

There are, however, other financing mechanisms available that can generate substantial increases in funding for MSP. Each of these alternative financial mechanisms has its pros and cons and should therefore be evaluated on their feasibility. We are currently compiling a set of good practices to illustrate possible ways to obtain financing for MSP. We expect to have it available here by the end of June 2009.

You can read about an initial set of good practices about obtaining financial support for MSP in Step 2 (p. 32-35) of the guide "Marine spatial planning: A step-by-step approach toward ecosystem-based management". Download (pdf, 1.55 MB)
